Founder & Executive Director
Barney Josue Vega Aburto is the founder and executive Director of Deaf New Americans Maine (DNAMaine). A Deaf immigrant himself, Barney brings lived experience, community leadership, and advocacy knowledge to the organization's mission.
Barney founded DNAMaine to address the gaps Deaf immigrants face when navigating life in the United States-particularly barriers related to language access, limited interpreter availability, and lack of culturally responsive support. his leadership is grounded in the belief that Deaf immigrants deserve full access, dignity, and the opportunity to lead their own communities.
As Executive Director, Barney oversees program development, community partnerships, advocacy efforts, and organizational growth. He works closely with Deaf community members, service providers, and partner organization growth. he works closely with Deaf community members, service providers, and partner organizations to ensure DNA Maine's work remains accessible, culturally responsive, and led by Deaf voice.
DNAMaine is built on the principle of Deaf leadership - that Deaf people must be at the center of decisions affecting Deaf lives. Under Barney's leadership, the organization prioritizes empowerment, equity, and long-term community impact.
